European nations had taken over new territories around the world for centuries By the 1880's, Americans believed they could establish colonies overseas. They wanted more control toward the Pacific (China/Japan) through economic, military, and political control

6 Imperialism and America: 3 Factors
Desire for military strength: Build up the navy to compete with other nations Trade with Foreign countries: Americans produced more goods than they consumed They needed raw materials and new areas to sell their goods Led to building the Panama Canal Superior Culture: Belief their culture was better than Asian, Latino, and African cultures

Hawaii was ruled by Queen Lili'uokalani Americans had plantations on the Island The Queen was over thrown and Hawaii was made a territory through an annexation treaty It was also considered an important military base for America.

Alaska was purchased from Russia for 7.2 million dollars Provided the United States a presence in the Pacific Region

Both territories offered the United States a presence in the Pacific Alaska was rich in timber, minerals, and as it turned out oil Hawaii had American owned sugar plantations already in place America wanted naval base (Pearl Harbor) in protect its interests in the Pacific

U.S. interest in Cuba Exaggerated stories of Spain's horrible treatment of people in their colonies. (yellow journalism) U.S.S. Maine blew up in Cuba The US blamed Spain for the attack

Spain freed Cuba Turned over Puerto Rico and the islands of Guam to the U.S. It also sold the Philippines for $20 million to the U.S.

Puerto Rico became an U.S. territory and made Puerto Ricans U.S. citizens Important to have a U.S. presence in the Caribbean and protecting a future canal in Panama

14 Reasons for Expanding Cuba became independent, but a U.S. protectorate (partially controlled by the U.S.) Protect American business interests Use land for naval and refueling stations. (Panama Canal)

Reduce travel time to sell their goods Short-cut between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans Wanted to control who came through the canal Wanted to make money off of charge fees to use the canal

Columbia ruled Panama at the time The US had to help fight Columbia to have an independent Panama US had to pay Panama $10 million and annual rent Builders fought diseases and had to drain swamps and work with harsh lands
