Objectives Service structure What we deliver to students
Place in the eLearning Team and importance to Digital and Information Literacy Look specifically at how we used Aquinas’s eSafety programme to raise the profile of the Library Service So I’ll start off telling you a bit about the structure of the service and who has responsibility for Information Literacy delivery, and then quickly touch on the range of what we deliver in these sessions. However what I want to focus on more particularly is the way we work with the eLearning Team to promote information and Digital Literacy College wide. More specifically I then want to focus on the eSafety strand of our digital literacy. Primarily because this case study illustrates how inclusion in a formal strategy helped the programme grow and develop. But also it underlines the importance (and hopefully this will add an extra dimension to our debate afterwards) of embedding your service into all areas of College life. Making your service indispensible in some way is your way of getting the edge.

IT Support & Technicians
Learning Support Student Information Careers Service IT Support & Technicians So as a physical entity, Library services sits with in the Learning Centre; a 3 storey one-stop-shop where students can access all of these services. The Learning Centre is made up of a number of area, [Click 1] Student Information down on the ground floor, [Click 2] Learning Support on the 1st floor, [Click 3] the Careers Service also on the ground floor, [Click 4] Library Services, mainly on the first floor, but also up here on the second, and [Click 5] IT Support & Technicians, who are also based up on this floor. This is the structure of the library team
This is the structure of the library team. So myself, the Assistant Librarian and the Senior Library Assistant are responsible for curriculum liaison. Information Literacy delivery itself is undertaken by myself and the Assistant Librarian with some input by the Senior Library Assistant (though as an aside I have applied to have this post regarded so that they too can take a fuller part in its delivery).

These are the sorts of things we look at in sessions:
Search techniques; using Boolean Logic Promoting use of online resources Evaluating resources Citations and referencing

Role of Library Services eLearning Annual Review
eLearning Team Role of Library Services eLearning Annual Review So now I want to talk about our role in the eLearning team and how that helps us develop our Information Literacy offering. First then a bit of background on the team – it is a cross College team which leads on eLearning throughout the College. It’s led by the Senior Manager responsible for Learning Resources (and indeed all of College’s support service functions), College’s systems developer, the member of the teaching staff with special responsibility for eLearning and, as with many other cross college groups, we make sure that somebody from the team is participating (in this case myself and my Assistant Librarian) – so continually on all fronts getting involved; raising our profile; generally making a nuisance of ourselves! One of the things the eLearning team does is meet with the tutors in each subject area to carry out an annual review (use of equipment, VLE, etc.) and as part of our input we look specifically at the range of eResources available for each subject area. Then specifically push their usage as necessary for the improved Digital Literacy of their students.
10
What can the Learning Centre do for you?
We can provide sessions on using eResources to your students. This can be anything from a quick 5 minutes to a full lesson. Last year 122 sessions were delivered to a wide range of subjects. Example : Applied Business Before the sessions : 81% of students felt either unsure or unconfident about their research skills. After the sessions: 89% of students felt either very confident or confident about their use of research skills online. “These lessons should be done more….” “Very good, is VERY useful!” “Cheers!” “Lesson was very useful and helpful” So I will present them with the kind of information you see on this slide here.

Role of Library Services Raising the teams profile
eSafety at Aquinas Role of Library Services Raising the teams profile Now I’m going to talk more specifically about our eSafety offering of Digital Literacy, and use its development as a case study as to how we’ve raised the library service’s profile. This has been achieved by getting our role in a major cross College initiative written into the College’s eLearning Strategy and Plan.

CEOP Ambassador 1 day training Mar 2012 L&T Staff Development pilot Feb 2013 INSET ½ day training all teaching staff May 2013 & beyond College Governors New starters Feb 2014 Tutorial & Assemblies SID programme The Future eAmbassadors programme So the birth of our eSafety strategy began when I put myself forward to undertake the CEOP Ambassador training, again this started via the eLearning Team. CEOP offer a 1 day ‘Ambassador’ training course which I attended in February 2012. Just in case there is anyone unfamiliar with CEOP ...
14
CEOP Overview We work in partnership to protect children and young people from sexual exploitation – in the online and offline world CEOP are The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre and are part of UK law enforcement. You probably will have seen this ‘Click CEOP’ report button on lots of websites. This is the aim of CEOP – there is a focus on online abuse but also recognising the connection to real world exploitation.
15
CEOP Ambassador Training
Completion of the CEOP Ambassador training then allows you to cascade accredited training onto others which enables them to register and access the ‘Think U Know’ materials for delivery to students and young people.

From this we gauged how we might deliver across the whole College, what they felt about the training etc. From this we developed a half day training session and managed to secure a slot to deliver this in our February INSET day which meant that we could reach most of the teaching staff in one hit. Plus the kudos that this was a whole College training event being led by Library Services.

Risks posed to young people online and Social Networking in the news How to access the Thinkuknow resources e-Safety at Aquinas College So this slides give you a quick overview of what this session included. This is essentially the training materials provided by CEOP, but there is some leeway to adapt this to local needs as long as you stick to the core of the CEOP presentation. We added opinion clips from our own students and generally made it as interactive and engaging as possible. (before I embarked on the training I was warned that one of the staffs’ worst experiences at a previous INSET day had been on Safeguarding – where an external trainer had stood for hours talking through 100s of text heavy slides) 17

These were developed around the idea of the ‘Accidental Outlaw’ and how our actions online might unwittingly put us outside the law or at least on a very sticky wicket! As well as the materials for the tutorials and assemblies also ran a poster campaign around College using themed posters and items on the display screens.

So because of the standing we have managed to create for ourselves in the College in terms of eSafety, when I return to College on Monday I will be tabling a proposal to senior management on developing a team of student eAmbassadors, with the idea that they will provide peer-to-peer support to their fellow students on eLearning matters.
21
The first part of the programme is through a partnership with KPMG and the Cyper Champions initiative. The CYPERchampions programme is a nationally recognised scheme where by recent business graduates working at companies like KPMG provide eSafety training and mentoring to schools and colleges. We have put in place the opportunity for a selected cohort of Aquinas students to attend on-site training at KPMG’s Manchester offices to be trained as Cyper Prefects

Outcomes Library Service – raised profile – INSET Day; Governors Training; assemblies & tutorials Met College’s Safeguarding obligations Increased tutors’ confidence (96% felt confident or more confident) So these are the specific outcomes achieved by this. By raising the profile and position of the team it means we are more able to gain direct access to students to deliver on Information and Digital Literacy.
23
eLearning Plan AIM 2: Supporting students skills development (independent learning, digital literacy , employability) AIM 3: Supporting safeguarding requirements (e-safety) Key Actions ‒Strategies ‒Targets Measurable Outcomes ‒Review of Outcomes But also importantly we were able to achieve this because we got ourselves written into the eLearning Plan and Strategy. In fact for we lead on 2 of the aims and there is only a total of 3 and this is the eLearning Plan for the whole College.

Trendster Habbo Foursquare Flickr Blogster Diaspora LiveJournal Also we added ‘fun’ elements to make the training memorable and not too dry (before I embarked on the training I was warned that one of the staffs’ worst experiences at a previous INSET day had been on Safeguarding – where an external trainer had stood for hours talking through 100s of text heavy slides) Now as promised, just to give you a bit of respite from me droning on I thought I’d let you have a go at some of the exercises from the training. So firstly you should all have the photosheet – if you want to be filling that in – answers at the end. Now this one here was done in the form of the popular quiz game Pointless – so for the full INSET training session we had lights, musical and visuals – but for this simplified version we just have a list. Now this is a list of Social Networking sites – all genuine, apart from 4 – which we made up. For this version of the game then I would just like you to call out which you believe to be the fake ones. [SORKIN OTAKU TRENDSTER HASHTAG] Otaku Hashtag Piczo Kiwibox Faceparty Instagram
