1 AIDET Body Mechanics

2 AIDET Acknowledge Introduce Duration Explain Thank AIDET is an acronym that will help us use the five fundamentals of excellent communications when interacting with our patients and customers. It is a useful guide to communicating with patients and their families in a way that helps them manage their own nervousness and anxiety, which in turn helps them accept their treatment plans. Ultimately, AIDET will lead to improved clinical outcomes and the best healthcare experience for our patients.

3 AIDET stands for:

4 Example of AIDET “Good Morning, Mrs. Smith. My name is ____. I am a nursing student and will be caring for you this morning from 7:00 to ______. I am in my second semester of nursing school. I have been educated to provide personal care and to administer medications. My goal is for you to be very satisfied with you care….” It's important to note that AIDET is NOT a script; it is contextual and should be used to provide others with the information they need when they need it. AIDET is a way for us to anticipate and speak to/provide for others' needs.

6 Body Mechanics Body mechanics refers to the way we move our body. Using good body mechanics at work can prevent many of the cause of back pain and injury.

7 Back Injury The most common back injury is strain on the lumbar muscle group, which includes the muscles around the lumbar vertebrae.

8 Causes of Back Injuries
Increase force/stress Repetitive Motion/twisting Forward bending Poor or improper lifting techniques Poor posture Poor job design Deconditioned/poor physical fitness

9 Causes of Back Injuries
Forward bending Poor posture Forward bending can over-stretch the low back muscles to the point where they can lose strength to protect the spine from injury. Poor posture means that the spine’s normal curves are exaggerated or decreased creating stresses and strains in the tissues.

10 Causes of Back Injuries
Poor or improper lifting techniques Repetitive Motion/twisting 1.) To lift a heavy object like a moving box, squat as close to the box as you can. Move your feel shoulder-width apart, and lift the box by straitening the knees and tightening your core. Keep the box as close to your body as possible, keep your knees slightly bent while you move and do not lean back as you walk forward! If you need to move the box to one side, avoid twisting your body. Instead, shuffle your feet around until they are directed at where you plan to set down the box. Do not forget good body mechanics when you put the box down; reverse the lifting motion! TAKE AWAY: BEND KNEES; PUSH RATHER THAN PULL (PUSHING IS MUCH EASIER FOR YOUR BACK) Twisting over stretches lignments and muscles causing weakness Twisting can damage discs especially combined with bending. TAKE AWAY: NO TWISTING

11 Causes of Back Injuries
Poor job design Increased force/stress

12 Deconditioned/Poor Physical Fitness
Obesity creates extra work for the spine Leads to excess fatigue and wear/tear in the body Nicotine damages connective tissue decreasing circulation and oxygen in the blood which affects muscle strength.

13 Prevent Back Injury Know your individual capabilities for activities
When you cannot safely complete a task, assess the number of people you will need to help you
