2. Aims and Objectives
To develop new knowledge and understanding of Sandycombe Lodge.
To understand what local History is and the importance.

3. What is Local History?
Local History is the study of history in a geographically local context and it often concentrates on the local community.
This PowerPoint looks at the villa in Sandycoombe Road, Twickenham, known as Sandycombe Lodge. The house offers the community a great deal by looking at the type of people who lived there in the past. In particular J.M.W. Turner, Joseph Todd and the Beaumont.

4. J.M.W.Turner
Joseph Mallord William Turner is one of the greatest English artists.
He was born on the 23rd, April, 1775, in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London.
His father was a barber – this means he cut men’s hair.
From the age of 17, Turner started travelling because he always wanted to find something new to paint. He visited parts of Britain and across Europe.
All his life, he painted ships and the sea.
Turner continued to paint almost to the end of his life. He died in 1851, aged 76.

6. Sandycombe Lodge, Twickenham
Key Facts
It was designed and built in 1813 by England’s greatest landscape painter, Joseph. Mallord. William . Turner (1775–1851).
Originally known as Solus Lodge
Since the sale of Sandycombe Lodge in 1826 by Turner, it has had several owners including: Joseph Todd, James Morrison and the Beaumont.

7. The Beaumont's
During the Victorian period, the Beaumont family owned Sandycombe, from the mid- 1840s to the mid 1880s. That is a grand total of 37 years that’s a really long time!
George Duckett Barber Beaumont ), a barrister,- lived at the house with his wife Elizabeth and 7 children.
He was responsible for adding several extensions to the property.
The next owner was Maria Henrietta Barber Beaumont( ). Sister of George Duckett Barber Beaumont.

8. Sandycombe during World War Two
During World War II Sandycombe became a ‘shadow factory’, - a factory concealed as a private house to hide it from enemies, where airmen’s goggles were made. 
However the use of heavy sewing machines damaged the house badly in particularly: the staircase, the floors and ceilings of the house.
In 1947, the house was acquired in a poor state by Professor Harold Livermore and his wife Ann.

11. Sandycombe Lodge Today
Sandycombe Lodge was in bad condition and was put on English Heritage’s ‘at risk’ register and in need of significant restoration.
In , £2.4m  funds were raised for a full restoration of Sandycombe Lodge. With a £1.4million grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund and rest from the Architectural Heritage Fund and other private supporters from generous foundations. Work began in 2016. 
Opening in July 2017.
