8 Coat of Arms First coat of arms can be linked all the way back to 13th Century; the 1200s. The field = the shield (blank slate) Colors/Metals = Blue, red, purple, black, and green, silver and gold Animals = lions, serpents (see template) Geometric patterns = (ordinaries shown) Evolution occurred over time to signify feudal systems. Slight variations were made for family member roles. The coat of arms became evident when knights began wearing helmets into battle. Once faces were covered by helmets, knights could not determine who was friend or foe; coat of arms drawn on clothing worn over armor gave them the ability to divide battle lines.
