Concentration

Artist Statement My concentration revolves around the theme of competing patterns. Through the use of acrylic paint, watercolor, pen and colored pencil I sought to communicate the beauty and complexity of patterns that are overlooked or unnoticed in daily life. In each of my pieces I experimented with a variety of patterns placed together in ways that could easily clash or appear discordant. The objective, then, was for patterns to compliment one another and become instead pleasing to the eye. When I began my concentration, I started out using very conventional forms of pattern for example, on clothing and bedding (image 1 and 3). As I experimented with different patterns and subjects for my pieces, I began to branch out and use more unconventional examples of pattern. As shown in image 9, rather than using patterns on cloth, I painted the patterns on plants and on the pots they are planted in. In image 6, I painted freckles for a pattern against the markings on a moth’s wings. I used many different media to create my pieces to allow each pattern to stand out. For my culminating piece, (image 12) I really wanted to heighten the complexity of the patterns and the juxtaposition of textures. This is most evident in the fibrous membrane of the orange against the competing patterns of the plate and countertop.
