4. Smarter Balanced Placement Policy for UH System
In Dec. 2014, the Chief Council of Academic Officer and the Council of Student Affairs Officers approved the use of SB Scores for PLACEMENT purposes only
For Math and English/Language Arts entry level courses only
Scores valid for 24 months
Pilot for graduating classes of 2016, 2017, 2018
Permanent Policy starting for the class of 2019
Scores will not expire

5. Using Smarter Balanced for Placement into Gateway Math
Score of 4 or 3 (STEM; take advanced 4th year w/HIDOE): Can place up to Math 135
Score of 3 (non-STEM): Place into Math 100, 111, 115 with no 4th year of math
Score of 2 plus B or higher in Intro to College Mathematics (ACCN: MIC1200): Place into Math 100, 111, or 115
NEW POLICY: Score of 1 plus B or higher in Intro to College Mathematics: Place into ONE LEVEL below Math 100, 111, or 115 (Starting with HIDOE class of 2019)

6. Using Smarter Balanced for Placement into ENG 100
Score 4: Direct placement into ENG 100
Score 3 plus B or higher in 12th Grade ELA
NEW: Score 2 plus B or higher in Expository Reading and Writing (ACCN: LCY5000)
Score 1: Accuplacer

7. Pilot Policy (ends class of ‘18) vs
Pilot Policy (ends class of ‘18) vs. Permanent Policy (starts class of ‘19)
ELA Transition Course is now included (small pilot group for class of 2018)
Math Score of 1 plus a grade of B or better in Intro to College Math will place you one level below Math 100, 111, or 115
Scores do NOT expire
Out of state scores are only accepted at the 3 or 4 level
Transition courses from other states are not accepted
Compass changed to Accuplacer

11. Of the146 Intro to College Math pilot participants who graduated in 2016, 36% met the UH placement policy criteria because of SB score of 2 and grade of B or better in the course
SY students enrolled in Introduction to College Math at 4 pilot schools; 1 student at Waimea HS was enrolled in course but removed from data b/c school not in pilot.
146 students graduated Class of 2016 (5 students at Kapaa were 11th graders)
53/146 = 36% met UH placement policy criteria of SBA = 2 and B or better in this course.

12. Pilot participants had higher college enrollment rates.
Overall first fall (anywhere) college enrollment rates for all 146 graduates was 63% (92/146).

13. Nearly 2/3 of pilot participants passed a college level math by Spring 2017.

Of the 76 graduates enrolled at UH by Spring 2017:
63% of students passed a college level math class with a D or better by Spring 2017
11% of students attempted but did not pass a college level math class by Spring 2017
11% of students had only taken below college level math courses by Spring 2017
15% of students had not taken any math courses at UH by Spring 2017
(Original analysis based on 70 graduates enrolled by Fall 2016 and what classes they attempted by Spring This includes additional students not previously matched or who started at UH in Spring 2017.)

14. Nearly 3/4 of pilot participants who took a college level math by Spring 2017 earned a C or better.

Of the 76 graduates enrolled at UH by Spring 2017:
56 students had enrolled in a college level math course at UH by Spring 2017
Of those who attempted a college level math class, 48 passed their college level math course with a D or better (overall pass rate 48/56=86%)
For those who took MATH 100 or 115 (no one took 111), pass rate was 86% (18/21=86%).
FYI – for those who took MATH 103, pass rate was 83% (20/24 = 83%)
