WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE SAVED ?
Fall Doctrine
3
Order of Salvation God chooses us – election
God calls us – through the gospel message God gives us – new spiritual life through regeneration Conversion – we repent and believe in Christ (saving faith) Justification – our legal declaration that we are forgiven and not guilty before God Fall Doctrine
4
Order of Salvation Adoption – we become members of God’s family
Sanctification – we become more holy and more like Christ Perseverance – we remain Christians for the rest of our lifetime Death – our bodies die but our souls go to heaven Glorification – our bodies raised from the dead and made perfect when Christ returns Fall Doctrine
5
JUSTIFICATION – Sola Fide
Fall Doctrine
6
Justification Saving Faith Sins Forgiven Imputed Righteous
Legal Declaration Rom. 5:1 Rom. 8:1 Rom. 5:19 Rom. 8:33 “Since we are justified by faith” “No Condemnation in Christ Jesus” “Through one man Many will be made righteous” “God is the one who justifies” Fall Doctrine
7
(We’re only neutral at this point)
Justification Paul explains justification in Romans 4 The Judge has declared us not-guilty The Judge has forgiven all sin (We’re only neutral at this point) The Judge sees only the perfect life of Christ Fall Doctrine

Justify – To Declare Righteous
Romans 4:5 But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness Fall Doctrine
9
Justify – To Forgive Sins
Romans 4:6-8 6 just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds have been forgiven, And whose sins have been covered. 8 “Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord will not take into account.” Fall Doctrine
10
Justify – To Impute Righteousness
Romans 4:3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” Romans 5:17 …the gift of righteousness… Fall Doctrine

Imputation To attribute to a person vicariously; ascribe as derived from another. Adam’s guilt was imputed to us Our sins were imputed to Christ on the cross Christ’s righteousness is imputed to us Fall Doctrine
12
Imputed God thinks of Christ’s righteousness as belonging to us.

ADOPTION Fall Doctrine
14
Romans 8:14-17 14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. All believers are related to each other Fall Doctrine
15
Romans 9:7-8 7 nor are they all children because they are Abraham’s descendants, but: “through Isaac your descendants will be named.” 8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants. We are partakers of one family even with the believing Jews of the Old Testament Fall Doctrine
16
Some Privileges of Adoption
Ability to relate to God as a good and loving Father Being led by the Holy Spirit God disciplines us as His children Sharing in Christ’s suffering and glory Members of one family 2. Rom. 8:14 - For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God 3. Prov. 3:12 - For whom the Lord loves He reproves, Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights 4. Rom. 8:17 - and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. Fall Doctrine

Questions Geared Towards Assurance
Do I see a long-term pattern of growth in my Christian life? 2 Peter 1:5-8 5 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
