what makes up a web address (URL) what we can ignore in a web address to help our internet research domain names & domain extensions some country extensions to domain names

URL stands for: Uniform Resource Locator

http://www. World Wide Web Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
Most websites begin this way so you can ignore this part of the URL when looking for appropriate websites for your research.

The domain name comes after http://www.
e.g. would take you to the home page of a company called the BBC

The rest of the URL just describes the pathway separated by / e.g.
So we can see that not only is the link from the home page of bbc: it is then taken from the arts page and it is then taken from a sub-section called multimedia and it is then taken from a page about turner

Sometimes the URL will end with html.
html stands for: hypertext markup language It is the computer language or code most internet pages are programmed in
