2
The iPhone and Android app
The app is a convenient way to record and share observations. Just download from the App Store or Google play depending on your device – it is FREE!
3
The Android app tutorial
Pull down on the list to “sync” your data with the website. You’ll need to be signed in first – Go to “Settings”
4
The iPhone and Android app
This is a quick tutorial for the Android version. You can find the same tutorial on the App by going to: Settings >> Launch tutorial

The Android app tutorial
Observations can be added offline and synced when a smartphone reaches an area with WiFi or mobile internet. This illustrates how you can add additional information and data to your observation, it also gives you the option to obscure the co-ordinates of the observation. This could be important for rare or endangered species, such the Rhino, which are under threat from hunters. For community-based forest monitoring, this would allow communities to hide location information of commercially valuable timber species.

iNaturalist’s unique selling point is its connection with a large volunteer group of amateur and professional taxonomists and scientific experts who can add value to each observation made by verifying and refining where necessary species identification. On your phone, you are able to visualise observations of species by other users, but not analyse results

The Android app tutorial
User guides are available offline on the iphone to identify species, and online on the android platform.

Setting up a project iNaturalist
9
Projects basics Projects are a way to pool your observations with other people on iNaturalist. Click here to see projects Projects you administer Projects you have joined
10
Projects basics Administrator only.
Click to edit project Terms and conditions of the project e.g. native plants only Custom banner Statistics and most observed species/observations
11
Projects basics List of project members
A way to add your observations to this project – batch option available Find observations that are appropriate for the project, but haven’t been added yet Multiple options for exporting observations Species checklist for the project Project use statistics Map of project observations
12
Project management and curation
Curators Curators can remove observations from the project and their identifications are shown alongside the observations on project- specific views. Curators can also see the true coordinates of private and obscured contributions to this project Managers Managers can do everything curators can do as well as editing project settings and write project journal posts.
13
Project journal A journal is like a blog. It is a quick and easy way to communicate with your project members and the iNaturalist community.
14
Customise your project
There are many ways to customise your project e.g. banner, icon, description, location, rules and custom fields…
15
Customise observation fields
When in ‘Edit project’ mode you can add custom fields. Search for a field e.g. ‘Plant height’ and select from the list or create a new field. See here for a full list of observation fields:
