Dangling Modifiers By: Natalie, Denice, and Katie

2 What is a Dangling Modifier?
A clause or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence. The meaning of the sentence is left “dangling” When a modifier "dangles" so that the sentence is meaningless (or means something other than your intent), restate it and add the words it needs in order to make sense.

3 How to Fix Dangling Modifiers
Make sure that the subject is the main doer of the action in the clause and make sure the main clause is meant for the subject. Example: Having arrived late for class, the door was locked. Corrected Usage: Having arrived late for class, the the girl found that the door was locked. Insert commas after class.

4 How to Fix Dangling Modifiers
Name the doer of an action in a clause to change the dangling phrase into a complete introductory clause. Example: Forgetting to read the material, it was hard to blog. Corrected Usage: The boy forgot to read the material, so it was hard to blog. Insert a comma before so.

5 How to Fix Dangling Modifiers
To make one coherent sentence put the main clause and phrase together. Example: To improve the paper, it was rewritten. Corrected Usage: He improved his paper by rewriting it.
