Motion Reference Point Speed Velocity Acceleration Positive Acceleration Negative Acceleration Conclusion
3
What is Motion? An object that changes position over time when compared with a reference point. What are some examples? Reference Point: The object that appears to stay in place, such as… Earth’s surface and nonmoving objects like buildings, trees, and mountains
4
What is Speed? The rate at which the object moves. True or False:
Most of the time objects travel at a constant speed.
5
What is Speed? FALSE! Most objects travel at a variety of speeds going from one point to another. When you leave this class for your next destination you’ll start walking, slow down, maybe stop and talk to friends, start walking again, speed up until you get to your final destination. How do we find our average speed from one place to the next? Such as from Mrs. Martin’s room to the MPR for Lunch?
6
Find Average Speed What is the formula for finding average speed?
Average Speed = Distance/Time
7
Find Average Speed (m) (Minutes) You start at Mrs. Martin’s Room and end at the lunch court. Do you notice anything about the graph? What is the distance travelled? How long does it take?
8
Find Average Speed (m) (Minutes) If you travel 250 m (distance) in 10 minutes (time) what is your average speed going from Mrs. Martin’s room to the lunch court? Average Speed = 250 m/ 10 min Average Speed = 25 m/min
9
What is Velocity? The speed of an object in a particular direction.
What are changes in velocity in this picture?
10
What is Acceleration? The rate a which velocity changes
Positive Acceleration Acceleration in which velocity increases Negative Acceleration Acceleration in which velocity decreases
