Vitamin K More than just a shot for newborns By: Kimberley Faraci
2
Vitamin K One of the four fat soluble vitamins
Fat soluble vitamins are stored The DRI for Vitamin K is mcg (dependent on age and sex) There is no establish UL for Vitamin K
3
What, where and why. Aids in blood clotting and coagulation.
Plants Kale, spinach… Vitamin K1 Organ Meats Fermented Foods Yogurt Grass fed beef and pasture raised chicken Vitamin K2 Is converted to K2 in the liver Vitamin K3 Aids in blood clotting and coagulation. Works with vitamin D, magnesium and calcium for bone health. Works with D3 to make sure calcium ends up in our bones and not our arteries.

Foods Broccoli (c) 46mcg (1/2 c) Blueberries (r) 28 mcg (1 cup)

5
Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone)
Found in green leafy vegetables. Goes to the liver Used for blood clotting and coagulation (Lloyd, 2015)
6
Vitamin K2 (menaquinone)
Found in organ meats, fermented foods, grass fed beef, pasture raised chicken and full-fat dairy. Is also produced by the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract Goes to the walls of blood vessels, bones and other tissues Where it works with other vitamins and minerals to deliver where calcium should be and keep it from where it shouldn’t (Lloyd, 2015). We end up with osteoporosis and calcification in our arteries when we don’t have enough K2(Wholefoodsmagazine.com, 2015). Studies have shown that supplemental doses of K2 can prevent calcification and it is indicated that it might even be able to reverse calcification (LifeExtension.com, 2015).
7
Vitamin K3 (menadione) Is a fat-soluble vitamin precursor that is converted into menaquinone in the liver. Menadione (K3) is not considered a natural vitamin K, but rather a synthetic analogue that acts as a provitamin. Necessary for the production of prothrombin and five other blood clotting factors in humans. It also regulates bone calcification. Toxicity has occurred in infants injected with this synthetic vitamin K3. ("Vitamin K - Menadione (vitamin K3)", 2006)

Deficiency Causes Symptoms Diseases like Crohns or Celiac’s disease
Drugs that interfere with absorption Malnourished Consume to much alcohol (University of Maryland Medical Center, 2015). Symptoms Easy bruising Bleeding from nose or gums Excessive bleeding from wounds (cuts, scrapes and such) Heavy menstrual bleeding Hardening of the arteries (Newsmax, 2011).

Vitamin K2 for heart health
Can reduce calcification of the arteries Can reduce Cardiovascular death risk Can help with Osteoporosis (University of Maryland Medical Center, 2015) Might help with Alzheimer’s (Whfoods.com, 2015). (Lloyd, 2015)
