Presentation Overview
Brief history of SM18 during the LHC magnet measurement campaign The Measurement & Control applications used for the LHC magnets Overview of the main measurement systems The new data analysis tools Planning for the next years The new Vertical Test Stations The GSI-FAIR Project
3
SM18 as a R&D magnet lab: 1992 – 1998 The SM18 Test Hall has been early associated with the LHC project: 1992 – 1993: Construction of the 2 first benches to test 10 m long LHC dipole prototypes. 1996: Construction of 2 new benches to test 15 m long LHC dipole prototypes.
4
SM18 as magnet production test: 1998 – 2007
From 1998 until June 2004: Construction of the infrastructure for the 12 benches Preparation for the LHC magnet production test (HW & SW)
5
SM18 as magnet production test: 1998 – 2007
From 2003 to February 2007: More than 100 people were working in SM18 3 shift teams 12–14 magnets tested per week ~ 1 week per magnet
6
SM18 as magnet production test: 1998 – 2007
LHC main magnets were produced in 4 firms: - NOELL (Germany, Zeitz & Würzburg) - ALSTOM (France, Jeumont & Belfort) - ANSALDO (Italy, Genoa) - ACCEL (Germany) Final assembly in building SMA18 Installation on a SM18 bench

The GSI-FAIR Project The Super-FRS is a two-stage in-flight separator to be built next to the site of GSI, Darmstadt, Germany, as part of FAIR (Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research). Its purpose is to create and separate rare isotope beams and to enable the mass measurement also for very short lived nuclei.
