A little bit about Romania...
Romania is a European country with a multicultural music environment which includes active ethnic music scenes. Romania also has thriving scenes in the fields of pop music, hip hop, heavy metal and rock and roll. During the first decade of the 21st century some Europop groups/artists, such as Tom Boxer, Morandi, Akcent, Edward Maya, Alexandra Stan, Inna and Yarabi, achieved success abroad. Traditional Romanian folk music remains popular, and some folk musicians have come to national (and even international) fame.

Romanian „folk” regions
The Romanian folk music is different in each of the 9 historic regions of Romania. Since they have different cultural backgrounds, obviously the music suffered changes too.

About folk music Folk music is the oldest form of Romanian musical creation, characterised by great vitality; it is the defining source of the cultured musical creation, both religious and lay. Gheorghe Zamfir, is famous throughout the world today, and helped popularize a traditional Romanian folk instrument, the panpipes.

Sârbă A sârba or sîrba is a Romanian normally played in 2/2 or 2/4 time. It can be danced in a circle, line, or couple formations and was historically popular not only in Romania, but also in Serbia, Ukraine, Hungary, Polish. It is fast-paced and triplets are usually emphasized in the melody. The sîrba is still popular in Romanian traditional music. It was named after the Serbs.

Brâu Brâu is a very common type of folk music especially in montaneous regions as Banat or Transilvania. It is very important at weddings and any other kind of celebrations.

Şotă At origins a Serbian dance, şotă became one of the most favorite dance for Romanians at folk parties. There are a lot of ways to dance or sing it. Here is the most traditional way!

Joc de doi Joc de doi is the fastest Romanian dance and type of song. Usually they dance or sing it for no more than 10 minutes, since it would be very hard to dance or to sing so fast for a longer period of time. :)

Romanian "fancy" folk music
It is not as popular as the ones above, but this kind of music is one of the most traditional and unchanged types of folk music. The subjects chose for the songs from this category are usually very deep and controversial.

Romanian religious music
Since 85% of Romanians are Greek Orthodox Christian, the religious music is very influenced by the Greeks. The most popular style is the byzantine one.
