LUMINOUS INTENSITY (I)
THE PHYSICS OF LIGHT INTRODUCTION CHARACTERISTICS PHOTOMETRY LUMINOUS INTENSITY LUMINOUS FLUX ILLUMINANCE INVERSE SQUARE LAW LUMINANCE & BRIGHTNESS MEASUREMENTS DEFINITION: AN INDEX OF THE ABILITY OF A LIGHT SOURCE TO PRODUCE ILLUMINATION. IT ALWAYS HAS A DIRECTIONAL CONNOTATION, SUCH AS HORIZONTAL CANDLEPOWER, CANDLEPOWER AT 60 DEGREES, OR SPHERICAL CANDLEPOWER. UNITS: AMERICAN STANDARD: CANDLEPOWER (CP) SYSTEM INTERNATIONAL: CANDELA (CD) LUMINOUS INTENSITY (I)

THE PHYSICS OF LIGHT LUMINANCE: INTRODUCTION CHARACTERISTICS
A MEASURED QUANTITY OF THE INTENSITY OF LIGHT BEING EMITTED, TRANSMITTED, OR REFLECTED FROM A SURFACE. UNITS: AS = FOOTLAMBERTS SI = LAMBERTS THE VALUE OF A FOOTLAMBERT IS 1 LUMEN PER SQUARE FOOT, WHICH IS EXPRESSED IN THE SAME UNITS AS FOOTCANDLES. CHARACTERISTICS PHOTOMETRY MEASUREMENTS ILLUMINANCE MEASUREMENTS LUMINANCE MEASUREMENTS REFLECTANCE MEASUREMENTS TRANSMITTANCE MEASUREMENTS LUMINOUS INTENSITY MEASUREMENTS COLOR CORRECTION: THE HUMAN EYE IS NOT EQUALLY SENSITIVE TO THE VARIOUS WAVELENGTHS (COLOR). MAXIMUM SENSITIVITY IS IN THE YELLOW-GREEN AREA WHILE SENSITIVITY AT THE RED & BLUE ENDS OF THE SPECTRUM IS QUITE LOW. THIS EFFECT IS SO PRONOUNCED THAT 10 UNITS OF BLUE ENERGY ARE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE THE SAME VISUAL EFFECT AS 1 UNIT OF YELLOW-GREEN. COSINE CORRECTION: CORRECTION FOR LIGHT INCIDENT AT OBLIQUE ANGLES THAT DOES NOT REACH THE CELL DUE TO REFLECTION FROM THE SURFACE GLASS & SHIELDING OF THE LIGHT-SENSITIVE CELL BY THE METER HOUSING.
