2 INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOBILE ERGONOMICS
ERGONOMICS IN AUTOMOBILE,SBPP INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMOBILE ERGONOMICS . There are many trends emerging now-a-days in Automobile world which is indirectly increasing the demand for Automobiles. The recent trends like driver less car which runs without a driver, Green engine concept which gives minimum emission of gases, Hybrid cars, Ergonomics in Automobiles & many more. From all this trends we will discuss about Ergonomics in Automobile, because with the increasing use of information technology within cars, ergonomics is becoming a major consideration in the design of user entertainment systems. Let us see it in more details. 2007: ford introduced “sync” to connect cell phones & iPods & other USB-based system 2010: capacitive touch-screen technology introduced in vehicle display 2011: plug-in electric vehicles expected to be sold in U.S market by major automotive manufactures with power consumption gauges. 4 ERGONOMICS IN AUTOMOBILE,SBPP
ERGONOMICS : What is it? It is a multidisciplinary science involving fields that have information about people involves studying human characteristic, capabilities, & limitations & Appling this information to design & evaluate the equipment’s & systems that people use. 5 IMPORTANCE OF ERGONOMICS
ERGONOMICS IN AUTOMOBILE,SBPP IMPORTANCE OF ERGONOMICS Ergonomically designed products are more likely to purchase. An ergonomically designed product can be used with physical work. An ergonomically designed product is easy to learn. Ergonomically designed products are generally more efficient. DEPART.OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING DEPART.OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING

Why Apply Ergonomics? It creates functionally superior products, processes, or systems Cost & time consuming redesign can be avoided DEPART.OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING

7 ERGONOMICS IN AUTOMOBILES DESIGN:
Ergonomics in Automotive design is the profession involved in the development of the appearance, of motor vehicles. DEPART.OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING

8 History of Automotive Ergonomic product Design:
ERGONOMICS IN AUTOMOBILE,SBPP History of Automotive Ergonomic product Design: 2000: Adjustable pedals introduced in the U.S. market on light truck products. 2000: NHTSA hosted the first internet forum in driver distraction. 2001: Smart headlamps introduced in luxury vehicles. 2007: ford introduced “sync” to connect cell phones & iPods & other USB-based system. 2010: capacitive touch-screen consumption gauges technology introduced in vehicle display. 2011: plug-in electric vehicles expected to be sold in U.S market by major automotive manufactures with power. 9 Ergonomics in Automobile Design process:
Developing the occupant package: Design consideration. In developing the vehicle package a number of design considerations related to the functioning of various vehicle systems and interfaces between the systems and occupant packaging considerations can be grouped like. 10 Driver Seat Ergonomics
Ironically, the best way to take advantage of the driver seat’s ergonomics is not to spend too much time in the seat. If you’re driving long distances, you should alter your position or get out of the car to walk around & stretch at least once every two hours. DEPART.OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING

11 Avoid long cushion length:

13 Six Tips for Ergonomic Driving
1) When you sit down, you should be close enough to reach the pedals comfortably, but not so close that the steering wheel is in your lap. 2) Your thighs should be comfortably supported by the seat base, but not so long that the backs of your knees are touching the edge. 3) Your knees should be higher than your hips and that the height of your backrest is proportioned to the tops of your shoulders 4) Your back should be fitted to the back rest. Sit so that your back, hips and buttocks are pressed firmly against the seat, and so that your seat belt fits correctly across your front. 5) Be sure that you don’t adjust the wheel too far up so that your line of sight is obscured. 6) While driving, keep your left leg extended next to the pedals and use stoplights or traffic to rotate your ankles and increase blood flow to your toes. Passenger Ergonomics Virtual reality (VR) is one of the many cutting-edge tools engineers use in crafting car ergonomics. With human beings generally living longer, as well as growing taller and heavier, it's important for cars to be able to adapt to serving more diverse populations. Using virtual modeling allows engineers to simulate the behaviors of the elderly or those with special needs, ensuring that car interiors are designed and tested for an increasingly diverse population. 15 Ergonomics in Vehicle Controls
ERGONOMICS IN AUTOMOBILE,SBPP Ergonomics in Vehicle Controls Vehicle controls constitute an essential part of ergonomics, which have power seats, automatic headlights, automatic climate control and electronic parking brakes, the latest in ergonomic innovation is often characterized by automation and ease of use. With new features, however, come new challenges. Now-a-days cars are coming equipped with integrated hands-free phone systems, often incorporating Bluetooth. But the challenge then arises of how to make this system accessible and easy to use without distracting drivers or requiring them to take their eyes off the road. CONCLUSION: In the light of this, it is recommended that Ergonomics in Automobile is very important from user’s point of view to give comfort, convenience, performance, & efficiency in Automobile & it can be achieved by increasing the use of information technology within Automobiles.
