4 A French commander was ordered to find a secluded spot where two trains could meet – he found a place called the Forest of Compiegne On 8 November 1918, a German train and French train pulled up within 100 metres of each other The Germans stepped out of their train, expecting to get into the French carriage But first the French gave the Germans a 10-hour ‘scenic’ tour of devastated French land They then returned to the railway carriages What would happen next?

You could get them working in groups on one reason each, creating a class wall chart to summarise. Big reasons can include: weapons and tactics, war at sea, America, Russia / the Eastern Front, Allied leadership (plus others you might have taught your class). It leads directly into the Cont. Asses. Question – so don’t spend too long on this activity… Get into the all-important lessons on writing.
