1 Reuben Pay It Forward Ch. 15

2 Characters Reuben St. Clair - Trevor’s teacher, currently dating Arlene. He has finally slept with Arlene after delaying that part of their relationship, however he is uneasy about how Trevor sees him, as well as how he sees Arlene. Arlene McKinney - Trevor’s mother, currently dating Reuben. She has no qualms with Trevor knowing about the status of her relationship with Reuben, in contrast to Reuben’s unease. Trevor McKinney - Started Pay It Forward. He is happy for his mother and teacher, he wants them to be together and is innocent to all of the adult complications that Reuben has. Louis Tartaglia - Reuben’s friend and a fellow teacher, he is openly homosexual. Lives in Cinncinatti. He speaks with Reuben over telephone about Reuben’s night with Arlene and his relationship with her. Miss Liza - Reuben’s cat. Acts as somewhat of a confidant to Reuben; her perspective thoughts are revealed in Reuben’s mind.

3 Plot Summary: Reuben wakes up the following morning after he
sleeps with Arlene. He tries to leave the house quickly, to avoid Trevor. Instead of leaving, he decides to stay for breakfast; the conversation between Reuben and Trevor leads to the innocent question, “Are you two going to get married?” Later that night, Reuben calls Lou, they talk about how admittedly, Reuben alone is uncomfortable about his dealings with both Arlene and Trevor. He comes to terms with the fact that he is ashamed of Arlene. Regardless of this, he tells Lou that he wants Arlene. He buys a ring for Arlene. Planning to give it to her on their next date. He doesn’t end up giving it to her, out of fear.

5 Plot Advancement: Reuben and Arlene’s Relationship is taken further. He frequently visits the house. Trevor encourages their relationship – ultimately his actions place pressure on Reuben Reuben has certain uncertainty about how he should proceed with Arlene – buys the ring; doesn’t propose.

6 Plot Setting: Arlene & Trevor’s home
The chapter begins here. Initially, Reuben wants to leave as quickly as possible, to avoid Trevor. Reuben’s home The first instance of Reuben at home is when he speaks with Lou over long distance. The second instance is a moment where Reuben confides in Miss Liza after finding the receipt for the ring. Jewelry Store Reuben purchases a subtle, but suitable ring for Arlene, intending to propose while on their date.

7 Plot Conflict: Man v. Self Reuben: Most of his dilemma is internal, despite having been focused around Arlene and Trevor.

8 Figurative Language/Literary Devices
Verbal Irony “Wow,” Lou said, “You’re getting laid. That’s amazing. Wish I could say that.” (Hyde 151) Imagery The ring wasn’t big enough to be flashy, but it was big enough, set in white gold with smaller diamonds halfway around the band.
