1 Our literacy focus for November is... FULL STOPS

2 Learning Intention To remember when a full stop is required
Learning Intention To remember when a full stop is required. Success Criteria I can use full stops accurately.

3 ANY sentence that is not a question or an exclamation needs a full stop.
If a sentence is a question it will ask something. If a sentence is an exclamation it will be an outcry of a strong emotion such as anger, shock or excitement. Unless a sentence does one of these two things you should use a full stop.

4 So how do you know when a sentence has ended?
A complete sentence contains at least one subject and at least one verb. Subject = the person or thing the sentence is about E.g. Sam, he, iron, door, dog, fly Verb = a doing word E.g. Run, sizzle, shock It must also be a complete thought. Once there has been at least one subject, one verb and the thought is complete a full stop is needed. Seniors: You may already have already heard about a minor sentences and one word sentences. These are exceptions to the rule.

5 Task For the sentences in this paragraph, make a list of the subjects and a list of the verbs: Jamie sat at the table chewing his food angrily. “I just don’t understand why we always have to have broccoli.” He said. “I hate it.” “But it gives you the vitamins you need.” Replied his mum. “There are plenty of other foods that do that mum.” He retorted.

6 Other tips Try to have only one ‘and’ or ‘but’ per sentence.
Make sure your sentences are not too long (the average sentence length is 12 words). The longer your sentence is, the less likely it is to make sense. Often people use commas when a full stop is needed. If you can use a full stop instead of a comma then use a full stop. Remember to use full stops when writing dialogue. Remember to use full stops even when you are only writing one sentence.

7 Now For the paragraph below, add in the full stops. You will also need to add capital letters after the full stop. Claire skipped excitedly towards her friends they smiled when they saw her “happy birthday” Susan shouted the other girls cheered and ran to Claire they met her with hugs and produced presents Claire was touched she hadn’t even mentioned that it was her birthday this week one of them must have remembered and organised all this

8 Finally Write the rest of this paragraph. She entered the dark graveyard. She closed the creaky gate behind her. The gravestones loomed over her. She heard a noise and turned around sharply.

10 Next Steps In all of your classes remember to use full stops accurately. If you do not then your teacher will put a P beside your error.
