Not man made Inorganic solid Does not come from something that was once living Has a crystal structure The particles of a mineral, or crystals, are arranged in certain patterns. Composed of different elements

I. Minerals How can we identify minerals? Hardness Color Streak Luster
Mohs Hardness Scale Color Easily observed property; can only be used for minerals that have the same color consistently (all the time) Streak The color of a mineral’s powder; found by rubbing the mineral on a blank tile called a streak plate Luster The reflectivity of the mineral; is it shiny, dull, glassy, metallic? Density The mineral’s mass per unit…regardless of size, density remains the same
