PROJECT: CROSSING BORDERS (1)
BASIS: COMMON HISTORY OF THE REGION MAIN TOURIST ROUTES TOURIST INFRASTRUCTURE OBJECTIVES: DEVELOPMENT OF HISTORICAL MILITARY REGION DEVELOPMENT OF JOINT TOURIST OFFER DEVELOPMENT OF TOURIST INFRASTRUCTURE TARGET GROUPS: TOURIST VISITORS, FAMILIES SCHOOL CHILDREN AND STUDENTS SCIENTISTS, EXPERTS RESULTS: JOINT WEBSITE EVENTS AND PERFORMANCES EXCURSIONS AND EDUCATION BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Crossed Borders is a project based on the interesting military history of the area expanding from the Kvarner Gulf and all the way to the northern mountain ranges. The area under consideration has represented an important passage for various nations and armies since prehistoric times. The so-called military historic region has been marked significantly by its strategic position. Today, this area is interwoven with numerous fortification systems, from prehistoric hill forts, Roman ramparts and fortresses, medieval castles and anti-Turkish forts and the Vallo Alpino fortification system along the former Rapallo border. In former Yugoslavia, this area was renowned for its extensive training-grounds and enormous military facilities. Despite numerous transit guests and the proximity of larger tourist centres (Postojna Cave, Reka, Škocjan Caves ...), the area has not yet been successful in retaining a large number of guests. With a comprehensive appearance in the tourist market, an enriched tourist offer, and the development of the required tourist infrastructure, the area could develop into a well-known tourist destination. This would contribute greatly to the revival of the economy of the area and to add variety to the offer of larger surrounding tourist centres. Ptuj,
