PARADOX (pg 27-29) Schools are more successful than ever. Reasons:
Demands rise faster than schools improve. Collapse of American manufacturing. “Flattening” of the World. Progress of other nations.

STUDENTS (pg 30-41) Major Goal:
Increase Student Achievement in Academic Subjects. Examples: /3 of 4th graders did not know which state they lived in and could not locate it on a map. 2003- American 15-year-olds mathematic problem solving skills was lower than the average for most countries. 2005- more than 1/3 of 4th graders and more than ¼ 8th graders could not read at “basic” level.

PARENTS (pg 39-40) No Limits + No Structure = Serious Problems
2000- about ¼ of fourth graders watched 5 hours or more of television a day. Early brain development. Set an example for children.

ACCOUNTABILITY (pg 40) Greater accountability than in the past.
School costs are much higher. Why? Special Needs Language Barriers Highly Diverse Population
