Understanding how to manipulate diet to suit different sports

Identify the proportions of food that should be consumed to show a balanced diet. Consider how diet is linked to levels of activity and the performer. Describe specific diets that particular performers use.

9 Specific Diets (1) Levels of Participation
Food provides the working muscles with energy Correct balance of food maintains correct body weight The body needs energy even when it is resting Activity effects your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) Energy in needs to balance with energy out Over eat, low levels of activity = put on weight Eat little, high levels of activity = misbalance

10 Specific Diets (2) Understanding ‘when’ to eat:
Before Activity: 2 hours before eating During Activity: NO! Banana yes! After Activity: 2 hours after activity Liquids need to be taken before, during and after activity as this prevents dehydration and increases levels of concentration and focus

11 TASK: With a partner I want you to design a diet specific to an athlete. Within your diet you need to state why they are eating certain foods and at what times they eat the food? What purpose does this have?

13 Michael Phelps Diet Breakfast: Three fried egg sandwiches; cheese; tomatoes; lettuce; fried onions; mayonnaise; three chocolate-chip pancakes; five-egg omelette; three sugar-coated slices of French toast; bowl of grits; two cups of coffee Lunch: Half-kilogram (one pound) of enriched pasta; two large ham and cheese sandwiches with mayonnaise on white bread; energy drinks Dinner: Half-kilogram of pasta, with carbonara sauce; large pizza; energy drinks

14 Dietary Considerations
Failing to maintain a balanced diet could result in the following dietary imbalance or deficiencies: Malnutrition – this is a physical weakness resulting from insufficient food or an unbalanced diet Obesity – this is a condition of being extremely fat or overweight, which frequently results in health problems Anorexia – this is an eating disorder primarily occurring in girls and women, related to a fear of gaining weight, self –starvation and a distorted body image
