Internet LINGO

What do all these words Mean?
Today we are going to look at some important terms, from the language of the internet. Before you know it, these words will be part of your everyday vocabulary! Keep this presentation as a reference in case you ever get lost in the language of the internet!

URL Abbreviation of Uniform Resource Locator (URL) it is the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web. The first part of the address is called a protocol identifier and it indicates what protocol to use, and the second part is called a resource name and it specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. The protocol identifier and the resource name are separated by a colon and two forward slashes. The term "Web address" is a synonym for a URL that uses the HTTP/ HTTPS protocol.

IP Address A numeric address that is given to servers and users connected to the Internet. For servers, it is translated into a domain name, by a Domain Name Server (DNS). For users, it is assigned by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) when the user goes online. DOMAIN NAME The address or URL of a particular Web site, it is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the internet.

Search Engine A Web site (actually a program) that acts as a card catalog for the Internet. Search engines attempt to index and locate desired information by searching for the keywords a user specifies. The ability to find this information depends on computer indices of Web resources (maintained in a database) that can be queried for these keywords. These indices are either built from specific resource lists (as is the case with a search directory) or created by Web programs with strange-sounding names that seem to be inspired by insects: bots, spiders, crawlers, and worms. Google is the most popular search engine. Others include: Yahoo, Bing, MSN, and Ask.com

Web Browser A program used to view, download, upload, surf, and access documents and web pages on the Internet. Internet Explorer and Firefox are well- known Web browsersthat enable you to view and interact with web sites.

Cut and Paste The process of moving a section of text from one place to another. First, you "cut it" (by highlighting the section of text you want to move and hitting Control-X or Command-X, on a Mac). Then you "paste it" where you want it (by positioning your cursor there and hitting Control-V or Command-V, on a Mac). While you are doing this, the cut portion is stored on your computer's "clipboard.“ You can also right click to select cut and paste.

Download To transfer a file from one computer to another, for example, from a server to your desktop computer. Download is the opposite of upload. There are a few methods of downloading on the Internet: HTTP, FTP and attachments are the most common. When you "load" a Web page into your browser you are essentially "downloading" the page from the server it is hosted on.

Server A computer or device on a network that manages network resources. There are many different types of servers: File server: a computer and storage device dedicated to storing files . Any user on the network can store files on the server. Print server: a computer that manages one or more printers , and a network server is a computer that manages network traffic. Database server: a computer system that processes database queries.

Wi-fi a popular wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide wireless high-speed Internet and network connections. ROUTER A device that forwards data packets along networks. A router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP??s network. Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect.

Virus A software program that replicates on computer systems by incorporating itself into shared programs. Viruses range from harmless pranks that merely display an annoying message to programs that can destroy files or disable a computer altogether. Whether they're considered malicious or malevolent, all viruses spread rapidly. Viruses are most often transmitted through .

SPAM An message sent to a large number of people without consent, also known as Unsolicited Commercial (UCE) or junk . Spam is usually sent to promote a product or service.

WIKI A "wiki" is a type of Web site or tool for doing jointly authored writing using the Internet. The idea is that this kind of "open editing" allows for easy interaction between users and/or groups and is effective in collaborative authoring. Fun fact: The term wiki originates from the Hawaiian word for "fast" or "quick“

Blog A Web site (or section of a Web site) where users can post a chronological, up-to-date e-journal entry of their thoughts. There are three basic varieties of blogs: those that post links to other sources, those that compile news and articles, and those that provide a forum for opinions and commentary.
