6 Reading Testing Mclass testing is done at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. Students are also progress monitored between testing. Students must read a book and answer comprehension questions about the story. At level F and above, written comprehension is included. It is important to have your child practice answering comprehension questions for homework. By the end of first grade, the benchmark reading level is J/K.

7 Math In first grade, students will :
Read and write number less than 120. Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems. Fluently add and subtract within 20. Compare 2-digit numbers based on meanings of tens and ones digits. Add within 100. Identify and describe two dimensional and three dimensional shapes. Partition shapes into two and four equal shares. Organize, represent, and interpret data. Tell and write time in hours and half hours.

8 Science First quarter - Earth Systems, Structures, and Processes
(Understand the physical properties of Earth materials that make them useful in different ways.) Second quarter - Earth and the Universe (Recognize the features and patterns of the earth/moon/sun system as observed from Earth.) Third quarter - Forces and Motion (Understand how forces affect the motion of an object.) Fourth quarter – Ecosystems (Understand characteristics of various environments and behaviors of humans that enable plants and animals to survive.

The Little Red Riding Hood Play – April 12th Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, SC – May 5th

12 Fundraisers To help lower the cost of our zoo field trip, first grade will do several fundraisers: North Newton t-shirts will be sold for $8 to any student or parent who would like to purchase one. We plan to wear these t-shirts on some of our field trips! Lollipop sales Krispy Kreme fundraiser *Please let us know if you are willing to help deliver shirts or lollipops at school!
