4 Notes: Ionic Bonding with Lewis Dots
This occurs between a metal and a nonmetal. The metal will lose electrons. The nonmetal will gain electrons. A positive and negative ion attract each other and form an ionic bond. The overall charge of the ionic compound is zero.

For each reaction, draw it on your white board just like the example. Include the table! Raise your hand when you think you have it. Write the final answer on your worksheet.

7 Ion Review When an atom loses an electron it becomes a POSITIVE / NEGATIVE cation. When an atom gains an electron it becomes a POSITIVE / NEGATIVE anion. When an ion is formed its outermost energy level is FULL / NOT FULL. Ions form bonds with other ions of the SAME / OPPOSITE charge.

Lewis Dot Diagram: A common, shorthand way to represent valence electrons and bonding. Dots represent VALENCE electrons, but they are drawn around the symbol for the element.
