1 Value Stream Mapping – Lite
Colby Riggs ILS Coordinator University of California, Irvine Libraries Based on: Improving Business Performance with Lean, by James R. Bradley Lean Step 1: Create the Current State Map is a production philosophy that considers the expenditure of resources in any aspect other than the direct creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. It relies on standardization of processes. Focuses on eliminating waste. By applying lean it leads to greater efficiencies. Gather all of the staff involved in the process (including the supervisor) Ask the staff to describe each task in the process including the delays and how many units are worked on in each task. To gather information beyond their description, to ensure the creation of an accurate map, ask the following questions: - Why, where, how and what? Value Stream Mapping Step 2: Analyze the Current State Map is a lean-management method for analyzing the current state and designing a future state for the series of events that take a product or service from its beginning through to the customer. Look for unnecessary lead time and possible ways to reduce that wasted lead. Use these as a guide for analysis: - Simply and Streamline - Standardize - Synchronize - Collocate Cycle Time amount of work effort/time to complete a task. The actual time the work is being done. Step 3: Create the Future State Map Quantity (Qty)Per Cycle number of units worked on for an individual task. Draw the map that reflects ideas for improving the process and reducing lead time. Delay Step 4: Implement the Improvements lag time/wait between each task in the process. Check how much the process lead time has improved and whether the improvement met expectations. Lead Time is the total time required to conduct an operational process. The amount of time that elapses between when a process starts and when it is completed. The reduction of lead time improves business performance. Step 5: Institute the Process by Standardizing It Expect adherence to the new process definition. (The new Current state map) Repeat the steps above indefinitely. eVSM is an add-in to Visio that provides additional functionality not included in Visio. It allows data about process steps to be specified and tabulated more easily, making it easier to sum up the total lead time of a process.
