2 Chapter 5 Capturing and Editing Digital Audio
Part 3 Music Creation

3 In this lecture, you will learn:
the basics of creating music using MIDI the basics of creating music by composing loop music

4 Types of Music Creation
MIDI: create original music scores require musical composition skills Loop music composition compose a long musical audio through repetitions of short musical clips common in projects that do not require a long musical score, for example: game development, product advertisements, digital art projects allow non-music composers to create musical audio

5 MIDI Not sampled audio Like sheet music
Constains instructions for recreating the music Created by editing music notations and instrument assignments Can also be created by recording your performance on a MIDI keyboard connected to a computer Playback of a MIDI file requires a sound card that uses the synthesizer to recreate the sound of notes

6 MIDI Programs Cakewalk SONAR Steinberg Cubase MakeMusic! Finale

7 Views in Cakewalk SONAR
Staff view: to work with notation and staff Piano Roll view: to visualize notes as they would appear on a player-piano roll Event List view: to work with a sequence of MIDI information

11 Cakewalk SONAR Assigning an Instrument to a MIDI Track

12 MIDI Playback Requires a sound card that uses the synthesizer to recreate the sound of notes Not all synthesizers produce the same sound Disadvantage: How the music actually sounds during playback depends on the sound card

13 Loop Music

14 Loop Music Music that is created from short music clips that are repeated Usually designed to loop seamlessly Libraries of clips for loop music are commercially available

15 Loop Music Example Programs
Sony ACID Pro (Windows) Apple GarageBand (Mac OS) General digital audio editing programs: Adobe Audition Audacity

16 Composing Music Using Loop Music
Programs support multi-track Import an audio clip to place on a track Create repetitions of a clip placed on a track simply by dragging its right edge to extend it You can adjust the volume of each track to fade in or out the clips

17 Sony ACID Pro 3 repetitions 2 repetitions

18 Apple GarageBand 2 repetitions 1.5 repetitions 2.5 repetitions

19 Adobe Audition 3 repetitions
In mulltitrack view, set the loop option for a clip. Extend its duration to create repetitions.

20 Audacity Use the effect called Repeat
Repeat a selection of the audio for a specified number of times

21 Review Questions Note to instructor:
Depending on your preference, you may want to go over the review questions at the end of this lecture as an instant review or at the beginning of next lecture to refresh students' memory of this lecture.

22 Review Question ___ deals with notations, staff, and musical instrument assignments. MIDI loop music A

23 Review Question What is the disadvantage of MIDI compared to composing music with loop music? How exactly the playback of the MIDI music sounds depends on the sound card that plays it. Thus, you do not have control over how exactly it sounds when other people play your MIDI file.
