Lesson 39 Are the Republicans really Conservative?
Aim: To consider the diverse views within the Republican party

Types of Republicans Social Conservatives – often referred to as the ‘religious right’, this faction promotes deeply traditional moral, religious and family values. Such policies include opposition to abortion, same sex marriage and stem cell research Fiscal Conservatives – this faction advocates free-unregulated market economics, reduced government role/expenditure and a balanced federal budget. Thus the key concern is economy, tax cuts and trade. Neo-Conservatives – hold social conservative views but their main priority is US interests in defence (nationalist) and foreign policy. This faction believes that the USA has a responsibility to challenge regimes hostile to its interests and values. Moderate Conservatives– have very moderate views regarding key issues; gay rights, abortion and immigration. They are referred to as Republicans In Name Only (RINOs)
