32 What are we going to do today?
Scale Drawings Use scale to draw a diagram Draw an accurate scale plan using a given scale expressed as a ratio Interpret real life measurements from a scale diagram Solve problems involving scale (Ratio and Proportion part 2)

33 Proportion If I travel at 45mph how many miles would I travel in 2 hours? What about 3 hours? What about 9 hours? Hours 1 2 9 Miles 45

34 Name 5 things you might use a scale drawing or model for
Where could scale be used? eg 1:50

35 Architects make models of buildings
Architects make models of buildings. Models are 3-D representations of objects.

36 People use maps to find their way
People use maps to find their way. Maps are flat 2-D representations of a plan view of an area.

37 Every qualified tradesperson will come across, and have to use, scale drawings as a normal part of their job. Drawings are one of the most important methods of communicating technical information to the building team.

38 • the finished job being the wrong size
• the job having to be done again • materials being under- or over-ordered • or even work stopping until the mistake has been sorted out. This will mean wasting time and money.

39 Estimate the height, in metres, to the top of the tree
Estimations Estimate the height, in metres, to the top of the tree

40 Estimate the height, in metres, to the top of the tree
The average man is between 1.6 m and 1.8 m tall 1 metre Approximately 11m Estimate the height, in metres, to the top of the tree

41 Estimate the heights of the buildings shown

42 Estimate the heights of the buildings shown
6.5 x 1.7 = m 5 x 1.7 = 8.5 m 3.5 x 1.7 = 5.95 m 1.7 m

43 Estimate the length of the whale shown

44 Estimate the length of the whale shown
The average whale is about 30m in length 30 m

45 Scale Drawing Scale drawing allows us to draw large objects on a smaller scale or a smaller object on a larger scale, keeping them accurate. All scale drawings must have a scale written on them. Scales are usually expressed as ratios. Example: 1cm : 100cm The ratio 1cm:100cm means that for every 1cm on the scale drawing the length will be 100cm in real life

46 Scale As a scale we would write this as 1:20
If 1cm on the map is 20cm in real life what would 3cm be in real life? What about 7cm in real life? What would 500cm in real be on a map? Map 1 3 7 500 Actual 20 As a scale we would write this as 1:20

47 Scale examples Scales can be written in many different ways

48 Scale drawing Scales are simple ratios i.e. how many of these represent that. E.g. 1 cm : 5 m So 1 cm on the drawing represents 5 metres on the ground. A scale of 1:100 where no measurements are given can be used for any measurement so 1 of 1 measurement is 100 times bigger.

50 N Distance to Town 40 cm Real Distance : 1000 m Scale 2 cm : 50 m Distance from Town to Shops 10 cm Airport Local Town Real Distance : 250 m Hospital Shops Distance from shops to Hospital 4.2 cm Real Distance : 105 m

51 N Distance to Town 40 cm Real Distance : 120 km Scale 1 cm :3 km Distance from Town to Shops 10 cm Airport Local Town Real Distance : 30 km Hospital Shops Distance from shops to Hospital 4.2 cm Real Distance : 12.6 km

52 Scale Drawings Here is a garden Scale 1 : 200 4.5 m = 3 m = ___cm
greenhouse shed 4.5 m = ___cm 3 m = ___cm 14 m = ___cm 12 m = ___cm patio 18 m = ___cm Calculate the scale diagram measurements

53 Scale Drawings ANSWERS
Here is a plan of a garden Scale 1 : 200 greenhouse shed 1.5 cm 2.25 cm 7 cm 6 cm patio 9 cm Calculate the scale diagram measurements

54 Find the actual height of the Eiffel Tower from the scale model.
Scale: 1cm = 10m The model has a height of 30 cm. This is 30 times bigger that the 1 cm on the scale so multiply 1 x 30 = 30cm. Do the same to the other side of the scale so 10m x 30 = 300m. 30cm Scale model Actual size

55 Find the actual height of the Empire State Building
Scale: 1 cm : 5m 76cm

56 Find the height of the Statue of Liberty
Scale 1 cm = 3m 30cm Height of the statue of liberty = 90m

57 Find the height of the scale model of Big Ben
Scale: 1 cm : 3 m 96m This time you know the actual height. This goes under the 3m on the scale. Find out how many lots of 3 go into 96 so divide. 96 ÷ 3 = 32 cm

58 Find the height of the scale model of Ben Nevis
Scale 1 cm : 50 m 1350m
