What types of work related activities make you stressed? How does academic rigor stress you out? How do you reward yourself after work? What do you do in your social life away from school?

Purpose Inform the class about the causes of and solutions to work/life stresses.

Facts About Work/Life Stress
Definition – A balanced Life is one where we spread our energy and effort – emotional, intellectual, imaginative, spiritual and physical – between key areas of importance. Americans in full-time employment increased their weekly average hours of work between 1977 and 1997 by 3.5 hours, taking it to 47.1 hours. American workers average about ten days of holiday a year, in contrast to Britain (25) and Germany (30). 26% of Americans take no holiday at all. Americans work twelve weeks more a year in total hours than do Europeans.

Solutions to Stresses Negotiate Change with Employers
Progressive employers recognize the value of good employees and are willing to discuss options to avoid extreme stresses Find a New Career/Job Family and personal demands might require a different career or job entirely Slow Down Find ways of separating yourself from work and meetings during evenings and weekends Time Management Setting realistic goals and deadlines with organized plans will lead to less procrastination and thus less stress

Solutions to Stresses Share the Load
In most cases, others around you are capable of doing tasks as well as you… find others who are able to split work when possible Look at the Big Picture Small events or jobs that go wrong usually aren’t worth the effort and anxiety; looking at the big picture will put those events in perspective Explore Options For families, look for babysitters or day cares… Pets, temporary kennels or available neighbors… look for options that will handle some responsibilities for certain times Set Priorities Developing a list of priorities will shield you from feeling overwhelmed and allow you to systematically accomplish things Simplify Understand what you are capable of doing and in what amount of time and set out to do just that with out taking on excessive work
