2 Baroque Art The Baroque Style began in Rome and included painting, sculpture, and architecture. This period lasted from 1600 to about 1750 AD. Art historians sometimes debate whether the Baroque style is the last stage of the Renaissance or something new entirely.

3 Rococo Style Many Art historians view Rococo as the final stage in the Baroque style. Rococo used lavish designs and pastel colors. Not as elaborate as Baroque Represented the “Old Regime.” Often depicted the aristocracy at play. Usually was smaller in scale and more idealized versions of subjects. Nudes become common More light-hearted. It “dances”.

5 Rococo Architecture Was known for its feminine curves, intricate designs, and flamboyance. Intricate details and very light colors. Winter Palace in St. Petersberg Russia.

6 Neoclassicalism Neoclassical style copied the works of the Classical & Renaissance artists. It was a reaction to the perceived excesses of Rococo Represented the ideal of the French Revolution and Napoleon. Often used scenes of heroism and self-sacrifice to teach moral lessons.

8 Architecture

9 Inside & Out Neoclassical architecture drew on ancient Greek and Roman exteriors and interiors. Pillars, columns, and archways were common features.

10 Sculpture Sculpture was one of the most popular mediums of the neoclassical style. Many of the busts carved during this period were of various Enlightened philosophes. Bust of Voltaire by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1778).
