1 Ancient Computing Devices
Created by Zack Johnson Presented by Ryan Bailey

2 Overview ENIAC Mark 1 Conrad Zues’ Z1 Babbage’s Analytic Engine (1830)
Babbage’s Difference Engine (1820) Jacquard Loom (1801) Pascaline (1642) Antikythera Mechanism (100 BC) Abacus

3 Abacus Calculator in ancient times
Used in Ancient Greece, Rome and China Origin unknown. Greeks developed Salamis tablet in 300 BCE. Chinese version Suan Pan came around 770 BC but the exact creation is unknown and is actually believed to be much older. Handheld versions created by the Romans in 300 AD.

4 Antikythera Mechanism
Considered first actual computer Tracked seasons, eclipses(even partial ones), planetary motion, and festivals Was found in 1900 but was ignored for 51 years. Designed to calculate dates and predict astronomical phenomena, has therefore been called the earliest analog computer. This thing could predict eclipses, seasons and festivals. Was the most advanced technology for 1500 years. Predicted to be constructed ~100BCE. Planetary motion in the mechanism was accurate to within one degree in 500 years.

5 Pascaline Arithmetic machine built ~1643
Only preformed addition and subtraction Made for his father, a tax collector

6 Jacquard Loom Loom that operated on punch cards
Charles Babbage adopted the idea of punch cards

7 Babbage’s Difference Engine
Babbage’s first attempt at a computing device Designed to work with polynomials Would have stood 8’ tall and weighed 4 tons Funding discontinued

8 Babbage’s Analytic Engine
Four parts Mill (think CPU) Store (Memory) Reader (Input) Writer (Output) Held up to 1, digit numbers Connected with Ada Lovelace

9 Z1 22-bit computing machine built in 1936
First programmable computer using Boolean Destroyed in the bombing of Berlin

10 Mark 1 First computer bug Debugging was literally removing a moth
Unsung hero Grace Hopper

11 ENIAC First modern computer
Constructed originally for the United States Army Calculated up to 2400X faster than a human
