From: Breathing Patterns During Spontaneous Speech J Speech Hear Res. 1995;38(1): doi: /jshr Legend: Summary of correlations between speech-related variables and scores on the Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire for the two factors Tension-Anxiety (TA) and Depression-Dejection (DD), which showed the most frequent significant associations. Session means for the variables ILV, TLV, SLV, volume inspired and expired, breath group length, percentage of Inspirations at structural boundaries, and dysfluencies per 100 syllables were calculated and correlated with the session scores for the POMS factors (see Table 7). Correlations of <.50 are indicated for each subject; the + sign indicates a positive correlation and the — sign a negative correlation. Dots Indicate that the correlation fell below .50. The insets show examples of 2 of the 28 significant associations between TA or DD and the dependent variables. Subject 2’s DD score and mean ILV, TLV, and SLV in each session are shown, and the adjacent inset shows a positive correlation between the percentage of breaths at structural boundaries and Subject 4’s TA score over the sessions.
