1 ROGER’S SCIENCE OF UNITARY HUMAN BEING MODEL

2 MARTHA ROGER 1936- diploma 1937- BS 1945- MA 1952- MPH 1953- ScD
Staff and leadership positions 1st proposed “An introduction to Theoretical Basis of Nursing” (Book) 1980- developed Science of Unitary Man Model 1983- defined as Science of Unitary Human Being Model. 1986- the dimension of Health; a view from space.

3 GENERAL INFORMATION This theory is based on Roger’s assumption about the person and interaction with the environment. She used 4 building blocks with the environment model. Energy field Universe of open system Pattern Four dimensionality.

4 ENERGY FIELD Are fundamental units of both living and non- living things. They are unique, dynamic, open and infinite. 2 types Human field (unitary man) Environmental field

5 UNIVERSE OF OPEN SYSTEM
Refers to idea that energy fields are open, infinite and interactive

6 PATTERN It is the characteristic of an energy field and is perceived as a wave that changes continuously. Patterns and organization of an energy field are manifested by its observable properties (like human behavior)

7 FOUR DIMENSIONALITY It refers to non- linear domain without spatial or temporal attributes. Its boundaries are imaginary and continuously fluctuating. Principles of homeodynamics is derived from these 4 building blocks.

8 PRINCIPLES OF HOMEODYNAMICS
Homeo-dynamics provide a nurse with knowledge of how to intervene to redirect a client in desired direction. Roger identified 4 principles of homeo-dynamics, in her book “An introduction to the theoretical basis for nursing” (1970). Resonancy Helicy Reciprocity Synchrony Later she replaced reciprocity & helicy with complimentary and then with integrality.

9 PRINCIPLES OF HOMEODYNAMICS
Integrality Resonancy Helicy

10 INTEGRALITY Refers to continuous and mutual interaction between human and environmental fields. Because both fields are inseparable, both have same features. As a result, sequential changes in life process takes place at the same time and in the same manner in both fields.

11 RESONANCY Refers to continuous change from lower frequency to higher frequency wave patterns in human and environmental fields. It describes the nature of changes that occur between the two energy fields. Life process changes are depicted as rhythmical vibrations oscillating at various frequencies and at varying intensities. The continuous change from lower to higher frequency indicates movement towards increased complexity.

12 HELICY Describes the nature and direction of change occurring in the energy fields. Refers to continuous, probabilistic, increasing diversity of the human and environmental fields. Is viewed as change occurring along a spiraling, longitudinal axis bound by space and time.

13 PARADIGM PERSON Organized energy field with unique pattern.
Person is also viewed as unified whole (unitary man) possessing integrity and manifesting characteristics more than the sum of parts.

14 PARADIGM ENVIRONMENT Is an irreducible, indivisible, pan dimensional energy field. Both the individual and environment are considered as open system.

15 PARADIGM HEALTH Defined health as an expression of the life process.
They are “characteristics and behavior emerging out of the mutual, simultaneous interaction of human and environmental fields.” Health and illness are part of the same continuum.

16 PARADIGM NURSING Nursing is an art and science that is humanistic and humanitarian. It is directed towards the unitary human. The goal of nursing is to promote health and well being for all persons and group wherever they are. Goal of nurse is to participate in the process of change the people can benefit.
