Number of stomas ….. Approximately 13,500 people in the UK have stoma surgery each year On average new stomas are formed each month at L&D. Currently 1100 patients on our stoma database

HISTORY OF STOMA NURSES
1958 – Norma Gill, (ileostomate) Highlighted the lack of support available 1961 – She set up the first training programme for professionals 1969 – In Uk the First stoma clinic was set up by Barbara Saunders at St Bartholomew's hospital She became the First stoma care nurse

L&D STOMA TEAM NOW… Stoma nurses have Bsc and working towards Msc in nursing The team has presented at a National Stoma Care Conference We have a Nurse Prescriber within stoma care We are actively involve with the community and hold patient events.
