2
What is the phonics screening?
The Phonics Screening is a national screening which Year One children take part in It is conducted in June with all children taking the screening during the week It is designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills in line with age related expectations
3
How do we conduct the test?
The test consists of 40 words including real and nonsense Each child takes the test in a quiet 1:1 environment with a teacher The test takes approximately minutes per child and are allowed to complete it at their own pace
4
Real and Nonsense Words
The test consists of 20 real words and 20 nonsense words Children will see a picture of an alien next to the nonsense words so they can identify them as ‘alien words’
5
Sharing the Results The results are shared with parents by the end of Term Any children who do not pass the phonics screening will retake the test in Year 2
6
Supporting Your Child Encouraging children to use their phonic knowledge to decode unfamiliar words when reading Creating nonsense words together (draw your own alien and name him!) Encourage children to use their phase 3 and 5 sounds in writing
