STATIC ELECTRICITY
2
Static Electricity: electrical charge confined to an object
Static Electricity: electrical charge confined to an object. This is created by friction. (lightning, rugs, clothes….) Conductors – allow the flow of electrical charge( most metals: Cu, Al, Au, Ag,) Insulators- Allows very little to no flow of electrical charge. ( non-metals-wood, glass, rubber) Semiconductors- Can act as an insulator or a conductor. (Germanium-transistors, silicon-computer chips)
3
CHARGES Like charges repel while unlike charges attract.
Charges can exert a force over a distance.
4
CHARGES Number of electrons determines the charge on an object.
POSITIVE NEGATIVE NEUTRAL
5
UNIT OF CHARGE 1 ELECTRON= -1.6X10-19C 1 PROTON = +1.6X10-19C
1 COULOMB (C) = 6.25 X 1018elementary charges 1 ELECTRON= -1.6X10-19C 1 PROTON = +1.6X10-19C 1 NEUTRON = 0c
6
LIGHTNING Friction in storm cloud causes a (-) charge to build at the base of the cloud. The ground becomes (+) by induction. (+) charge attracts (-) charge. Cloud-cloud, Cloud-ground, Ground -cloud

10, ,000 amps of current. V= 50,000km/hr T= 50,000 ˚F this will cause thunder. 10, ,000 amps of current. V= 50,000km/hr T= 50,000 F this will cause thunder.
8
GROUNDING: DIRECTS EXCESS CHARGE TO THE GROUND
9
INDUCTION- CAUSING A CHARGE ON AN OBJECT BY PLACING IT IN A CHARGED FIELD
The wall is charged by induction.
