Mastodons were confused which is understandable since they were giant,and shaggy. The elephant-like American mastodon was a distant relative of the mammoth. There has been over 200 mastodons fossils found across North America. Mastodons and mammoths are very alike. Mastodons lived about 23 million to 10,000 years ago
