Lund University Department of Health Sciences Cecilia Pettersson, Charlotte Löfqvist, Susanne Iwarsson, Åse Brandt Mobility and Mobility-related Participation Outcomes of Powered Wheelchairs and Scooters Conclusions Powered wheelchair and scooter interventions seem to increase participation; frequency and easiness in mobility-related participation. Method An instrument focusing on mobility-related participation outcomes of mobility device interventions (NOMO 1.0) was used at baseline, after 4-months and 1-year use. Objectives To investigate outcomes of powered wheelchair and scooter interventions after 4 months and one years use: Extent of assistance when moving around Engagement in different everyday participation aspects; participation frequency, easiness/difficulty in mobility during participation, and number of participation aspects performed Results The need for assistance in mobility from other persons decreased; 50% became more independent when moving around outdoors. Mobility while shopping, going for a walk, and visiting friends was experienced as easier at 4 months use and remained stable at 1 year use. The frequencies of how often the participants went for a walk/ride, performed shopping, visited restaurants, and culture or sport events increased at 4 months use and remained stable at 1 year use. The participants did what they intended to do with the powered wheelchair/scooter. Discussion A 4-month follow-up time seems adequate. Independence in mobility can be assumed to impact on life satisfaction and qualtiy of life and should also be assessed when studying the outcome of powered wheelchair and scooter.
