DANGEROUS CHEMICALS IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE
THE REALITIES THAT WE ARE BLINDED TO BUT CAN SAVE OUR LIVES DANGEROUS CHEMICALS IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE
2
Food Additives… Regulators and Legislation
• FAO / WHO Mixed Committee • JECFA-UNO • EFSA/AESA • RASFF • ASAE • Regulation (EU) ner.1129/2011- positive food additives list. •Regulation (EU) ner.1130/2011 positive food additives list for food additives, food enzymes, food flavours and nutrients. •Directive 2000/13/CE of 20 March 2000-Rotulation Rules
3
A food additive is… an odd chemical substance that is voluntarily incorporated in a food , generally in small quantities, in order to improve texture, viscosity, colour, flavour or prevent deterioration (oxidation, microbial growth, dehydration, destabilization or other undesirable changes ).
4
Types of food additives
Stabilizers and Emulsifiers E Thickners E Flavour intensifiers E Sweeteners E Antoxidants E Preservatives E Dyes E Food additives
5
ADD - acceptable daily dosage in mg/kg body weight, below which its ingestion is considered safe.
If it is ingested in a dosage above what is acceptable, it may result in: Malformations in fetuses Imunological reactions Allergies Cancer Behavioural disturbances Food additives The calculation of DDA is based on 60 kilos of weight.
6
Dangers of additive usage:
In laboratory tests with animals, many artificial colours proved carcinogenic or likely to cause various types of cancer, although there is no scientific proof that the same happens in humans. Dangers of additive usage: Synergism - the effect of the toxic substance is increased by interaction with other substances to the extent that the combined effect of both substances is greater than the sum of the effects of each of them when acting alone. Daily dosage Since you are using various food additives, these additives will accumulate, exceeding the recommended daily dosage.
7
Plastic Most plastic contains Bisphenol A or BPA, a substance associated with cancer, reproductive disorders and heart diseases. In some countries like Canada, Costa Rica and Denmark and some US states the substance is prohibited, but in Portugal it is used in the manufacture of all plastic products, such as bottles, cups for babies and plastic bottles. The contamination of the chemical occurs mainly at the time of heating. Do not heat food in plastic containers in the microwave. Do not put plastic film on top of a container at the time of heating. The water should not also be placed in plastic bottles. Buy plastic containers containing the "BPA-free" message on the label.
8
Pesticides and herbicides
They are used for controlling pests and weeds in crops and are generally toxic to humans. A 2009 study indicates that there is a higher incidence of cancer in the brain of children whose parents had great exposure to pesticides, herbicides and fungicides, at home or at work. Dyes Dyes contain lead in its constitution. Furthermore, paints, varnishes, waxes and some cleaning products contain volatile organic compounds (VOC), substances that, added to the lead, cause health problems, increasing the possibility of cancer.

Beauty Ingredients That Can Cause Cancer
Benzoyl Peroxide: Often used in acne products, it facilitates the action of known carcinogens. It is a possible promoter of tumors. It can produce changes in humans and other mammalian DNA cells, in some concentrations. DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine): This enhanced foam is an irritating for skin / eyes, causing contact dermatitis. Easily absorbed by the skin, it may accumulate in body organs, even in the brain. Repeated usage resulted in a large increase in liver and kidney cancers. Dioxin: Often present in the antibacterial ingredients, emulsifiers and ethoxylated cleansers. Dioxin causes cancer, reduced immunity, nervous system disorders, miscarriages and birth deformities. It is a hormone-disrupting chemical with toxic effects. The most visible example was Yushchenko, the Ukrainian president, who suffered from poisoning by dioxin and aged from one day to the other.
10
DMDM Hydantoin and Urea (Imidazolidinyl): Only two of the many preservatives that often release formaldehyde, which can cause joint pain, cancer, skin reactions, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pains, ear infections, chronic fatigue, dizziness and loss of sleep. Exposure to it can irritate the respiratory system, cause heart palpitations or asthma, aggravate coughs and colds. Pigment & Color FD & C: synthetic dyes from coal tar contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins on the skin, causing skin sensitivity / irritation. Absorption can cause depletion of oxygen and death. Animal studies show that almost all are carcinogenic. Parabens (methyl, Methyl, Ethyl, Propyl): they are used as preservatives and are not always labeled as parabens. They are used in deodorants and antiperspirants and have been found in breast cancers. Parabens, such as xenoestrogens (hormonal-disrupting substances causing hormonal imbalances), can contribute to male sterility in mice and humans.
11
PEG (polyethylene glycol): Made by means of an industrial process in which ethylene oxide is added to fatty acids to form detergent alcohols. Dangerous levels of dioxin were found as a byproduct of this process. PEGs are in everything, including personal care, care products for baby and sunscreens. Phthalates: Xenoestrogens are commonly found in many products and they are usually not listed on the labels. Health effects include damage to the liver / kidneys, birth defects, decreased sperm count and development of early breasts in girls and boys. Propylene Glycol (PEG) and Butylene Glycol: are obtained from oil and act as emulsifying agents, solvents. PEG is so toxic that it can only be handled with protective gloves, clothing and goggles to avoid abnormalities in the brain, liver and kidneys. There is no warning label on products where the concentration is higher than in most industrial applications.
12
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES): Detergents and surfactants that pose serious health threats. Used in car washes, cleaning of garage floors, engine cleaners and in 90% of personal care products that make foam. Animals exposed to SLS experienced eye damage, depression, difficulty breathing, diarrhea, severe skin irritation, even death. SLS may also damage the skin's immune system, causing layers that separate, become inflamed and age. Sunscreens Chemical Products: Avobenzone, benzophenone, methoxycinnamate, w PABA are commonly used ingredients that are free radical generators known to alter DNA and cause cancer. Triclosan: Synthetic antibacterial ingredient with a chemical structure similar to Orange Agent (code name for a herbicide and defoliant used by the US military as part of its war program)! It is registered as a pesticide and is harmful to human health and the environment. Classified as a chlorophenol, which are chemicals suspected of causing cancer in humans.
13
SHOCKING CASE: The environmental group Greenpeace says it found toxic products which are harmful to health in clothing and children's footwear of 12 international brands sold in 25 countries, including Portugal. Some of these brands have reacted denying the charge. For example, according to the report, 61% of the analyzed pieces had in its composition nonylphenols, a group of chemicals that cause hormonal disturbances. Eight articles (10%) had higher concentrations of this compound to 100 milligrams per kilogram (mg / kg), and in three pieces the concentration was greater than 1000 mg / kg. "Nonylphenols were detected in at least one article from every brand included in this study" and in "one or more items purchased in 21 of 25 countries," reads the report. In 35 items with printed designs, 33 contained phthalate values above the detection limit (3 mg / kg). Phthalates are chemicals used as an additive to make plastics softer and are considered carcinogenic. The researchers found concentrations of this compound of above 1000 mg / kg in two articles: a Primark t-shirt purchased in Germany and a babygrow from American Apparel purchased in the United States. The organization believes that the presence of phthalates in high concentrations in these two articles states that these compounds are commonly used to produce prints on clothing.

The Greenpeace report classifies as excessive concentration of perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) in children's Adidas swimsuits. Despite admitting that these results are "an opportunity to recheck the materials by an independent institute," the Adidas spokesman assured that the use of the product does not cause health risks. "The product has been fully tested and complies with all international legal requirements," he said.
