Unit 4: Guiding Questions
What molecules are found in all living organisms? Why do we need to eat a balanced diet that contains a variety of foods?

Objectives SWBAT define macromolecule and identify the four biological macromolecules found in ALL living things. SWBAT identify the monomers that compose each of the major macromolecules.

Introduction Biology is the study of LIFE
“Bio” means life Therefore, we will begin our study of life by learning about the molecules found in all living things.

Molecules Key Point: Two or more atoms of any element bonded together are known as a molecule

Polymers Key Point: Polymers are large molecules made up of many smaller, repeating units known as monomers “Poly” means many “Mono” means one Another name for polymers is macromolecules “Macro” means large

Macromolecules Key Point: The four macromolecules found in all living organisms are proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids Each of the four macromolecules contains the elements carbon (C), oxygen (O), and hydrogen (H) They are considered organic molecules because they all contain carbon

Proteins Key Point: Proteins are made up of amino acids
The amino acids are joined together by peptide bonds Amino acids contain carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, and also nitrogen.

Carbohydrates Key Point: Carbohydrates are made up of monosaccharides
Another name for carbohydrates is polysaccharides Carbohydrates only contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen

Lipids Key Points: Lipids are most commonly made up of fatty acids and glycerol One of the main types of lipids is fats, also known as triglycerides (1 glycerol, 3 fatty acids) Fats can be saturated or unsaturated Lipids contain mostly carbon and hydrogen, but also oxygen. Saturated fats= no double bonds Unsaturated fats= double bonds

Nucleic Acids Key Point: Nucleic acids are made up of nucleotides
Every nucleotide contains a sugar, phosphate, and a nitrogen base
