The Hudson’s Bay Company and the impact of the Royal Proclamation of 1763

Founding Two Frenchmen discovered the furs in the Hudson’s Bay region, but had to travel to England to find someone to finance a fur trading company. In 1670, the King of England granted a fur trading monopoly to the newly created HBC to all of the waterways that drained to Hudson’s Bay.

First Nations The first nations people were essential to the HBC as they were the ones going out to collect the furs. They would then deliver the furs to various forts along the river system. In time, whole communities developed around the forts. The First Nations people that lived in these forts became known as “home Indians”.

Royal Proclamation In 1759, the British defeated the French at Quebec and took control of Eastern North America. Chief Pontiac of the Anisinabe, began to plunder and burn British forts. To secure peace, the British issued the Royal Proclamation of It reserved all lands outside of the settled colonies as hunting grounds for “the several Nation or Tribes of Indians with who We are connected, and who live under Our Protection.”
