1 Nihilism/Suffering- The meaning of life part 3
A Mr. C Production

2 Do Now 1. What is the meaning of anomie?
2. What were Camus’ views on life? Please give at least 2 sentences to describe. 3. What does philosophical suicide mean?

3 Nietzsche beliefs He believed that we are made up of 2 parts: 1. Body 2. Mind. The body is to suffer and the mind is to create something beautiful out of the suffering. Think of the slogan: “No pain, no gain.” Discussion: Do you think Nietzsche would believe in that notion above?

4 Nietzsche continued Suffering in his opinion was the only way to achieve beauty in the world. Without misery and pain, life would be worthless. A person’s self-worth is determined by their suffering he stated.

5 Nietzsche Continued He said to own up to envy.
Use it as a guide to what we really want. Face up to true desires.

6 Nietzsche He believed in staying away from alcohol.
He only drank water and sometimes milk. He did not like the fact that alcohol numb pain. He believed that alcohol would hinder us from improving our lives. Contrary to this, he wanted people to live dangerously.

7 Nietzsche continued He believed that culture should replace religion.
Looked up to Greek tragedies. He wanted philosophy and art to be major themes.

8 Nietzsche continued He believed pain is sacred.
He said the ancient Greeks were the only civilization to view pain as sacred. Meaning of life=A need for suffering.

9 Dichotomy People are searching for a life that is only filled with moments of joy. Everlasting joy to contrary, is an illusion. Instead, life is filled with moments of happiness, sadness, boredom, and suffering. Discussion: Has anyone faced all 4 emotions at one point of their lives?

10 Pessimism Nietzsche believed that pessimism was connected to nihilism.
Life is completely inhospitable to everlasting happiness. You have two options as a pessimist: 1. You believe life is utterly meaningless. 2. Completely deny the earth and its existance.

11 Discussion/Reflection

What ideas of Nietzsche do you agree and disagree with? 2. Would you ever become a pessimist why or why not (It’s not just a yes or no question you have state a reason) 3. What are your personal thoughts on suffering.
