The crowning jewel of the cityscape is the cupola or dome of the cityscape Architectural and engineering wonder Was a goldsmith, sculptor, mathematician, clock builder and an architect Greatest achievement was in initiating a new style of building

The Cupola In 1418 he won a competition to design the dome (against his rival Ghiberti!) Work on the cathedral had been on going for generations and only the dome was left The space above the alter was so large that many claimed it could not be done!

The Cupola Was built using 2 shells one inside the other and linked by a structure of 8 Gothic ribs (and 16 smaller ones) 140 feet in diameter and rises 300 feet above the floor

La Primavera from the far right is the god of wind Zephyrus approaching nymph Chloris, whom transforms into the goddess of flowers, Flora. On the left, is Mercury and the three dancing graces; the central figure is Venus, immediately above her head is a blindfolded Cupid

Birth of Venus On Venus' right is Zephyrus, God of Winds, he carries with him the gentle breeze Aura and together they blow the Goddess of Love ashore. The Horae, Goddess of the Seasons, waits to receive Venus and spreads out a flower covered robe in readiness for the Love Goddess' arrival.

The model for Venus is thought to be Simonetta Cattaneo de Vespucci, a great beauty and favourite of the Medici court. Simonetta Vespucci by Sandro Botticelli. (w) Botticelli also used Simonetta as the model for several other women in his paintings supporting the view that he was actually in love with her. In fact Simonetta died at the young age of twenty-two and Botticelli expressed a wish to be buried at her feet.
