Effects on fetus Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) Other risks:
Physical characteristics: Small eye opening, short upturned nose, thin upper lips. Mental characteristics Problems with physical movement, seizures, low IQ, cognitive delay, behavioral problems, mental retardation Other risks: Preterm birth, miscarriage, still birth, SIDS, spontaneous abortion

Wide variety of woman Caffeine intake & smoking habits Drinking habits for each trimester Number drinks consumed in specific time periods

Results Occasional: 1-2 drinks per wk Low: 3-7 drinks per wk
Moderate: 8-14 drinks per wk Heavy: >14 drinks per wk Binge: >5 drinks per occasion Highest problems: Heavy & binge Early pregnancy
