Unit I: The Foundations of Chemistry
2
CHEMISTRY The study of the composition and structure of matter
3
Energy The ability to cause change or do work (move mass over distance) Types of energy: 1. Chemical 4. Light 2. Electrical 5. Mechanical 3. Sound 6. Nuclear
4
THE ABILITY TO DO WORK KINETIC POTENTIAL STORED ENERGY
CAN BE CAN BE KINETIC POTENTIAL CAN BE CONVERTED DEFINED AS DEFINED AS STORED ENERGY ENERGY OF MOTION EXAMPLES EXAMPLES CAN BE CONVERTED FOSSIL FUEL (oil & coal) GASOLINE ORANGE JUICE ELECTRICITY WATER FALLING COMBUSTION FOOTBALL THROWN FROM PAYTON MANNING
5
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can be converted from one form to another, but it cannot be created of destroyed in ordinary chemical or physical changes.
6
Factor Label/ Dimensional Analysis
OUR PRIMARY PROBLEM SOLVING METHOD TRUST ME…. YOU’LL GROW TO LOVE IT
7
What can factor label do for me?
Well….. It won’t get you a date this weekend or improve your game but… It allows conversions from one unit/dimension to another using known conversion factors.
8
What the heck is a conversion factor??????
Examples: 1Kg = 1000 g can be written as: 1000g or 1Kg
9
25 seconds equals how many years?
10
Convert 2.75 x 1010 seconds to centuries
11
A car going 85 miles per hour will go how many feet in 12.5 hours?
12
72 mi Equals how many inches per Second? 1 hr
13
How do you get good at this???
Practice!!!!!!
14
Metric System & Factor Label
BASES Length meter m Volume liter L Mass gram g PREFIXES kilo K = 103 centi c = milli m = micro µ = nano n =
15
Prefix + base = value base kilometer = 103meter Km = 103meter
Handout – using a metric prefix Go to overheads – factor label and metric conversions
17
Practice 1. Convert 1.33 Km to m 2. Convert 2.34 Km to nm
18
More practice 3. Convert 3.66 x 10-12 cm to µm
4. Convert 2.05 nm to Km
19
Cubic Conversions Volume is often given in cubic length units
example:(20in x 10in x 4in) = 800in3 To convert from one cubic volume to another the conversion factors must be cubed.
20
Example 1ft = 12in 1ft3 = (12in)3 = 1728in3 Examples:
Definitely not the same! DON’T FORGET TO CUBE THE CONVERSION FACTOR Examples: cm3 converts to how many cubic Km3
21
A swimming pool that is 20 ft by 15 ft by
? x 105 Km3 converts to miles A swimming pool that is 20 ft by 15 ft by 8ft is filled with water. What is the volume in liters? (1cm3 = 1mL) memorize this conversion factor
22
Density The density of a material is its mass divided by its volume, or its mass per unit volume density = mass volume
