1 GIVING A BOOK TALK

2 Book Talk Definition A conversation about a book that one has read, infused with joy and emotion.

3 Book Talk vs. Book Trailer vs. Book Review
Book Trailer: Focuses on the summary and plot of a summary. A trailer can be compared to the information we find on the back of book covers and in there inside pamphlets. Book Review: A book review focuses on an individual’s opinion of the book. They pass judgments and criticism on what they have read.

4 What is the Purpose...? THE PURPOSE OF A BOOK TALK IS TO “SELL” THE BOOK. YOU WANT TO GIVE ENOUGH OF THE PLOT TO INTEREST THE LISTENERS, BUT YOU ARE NOT GIVING AN ENTIRE SUMMARY OF THE BOOK. Do not tell your audience that it is a great book, but instead demonstrate that it is by what you tell them about it.

5 Book Talking Tips Select a book you love. You need to love the book you Book talk so that your passion and enthusiasm comes through to your audience. Read the entire book before giving a Book talk. Keep it short-great book talks are only 2 to 3 minutes long.

6 Tips for Book Talks Connect to texts Use passages
Give enough of the plot to interest the audience Highlight the interesting points that ou feel will grab your audience’s interest and Start a book talk with a... End a book talk with a... Leave the audience wanting more!

7 START YOUR BOOK TALK WITH A HOOK
IF YOU THINK YOU’VE READ THE BEST HISTORICAL FICTION NOVEL THERE IS, THEN YOU ARE WRONG. IMAGINE HAVING TO DECIDE BETWEEN WHAT THE WORLD THINKS IS RIGHT AND WHAT YOU THINK IS RIGHT. COULD YOU MAKE A DECISION IN LIFE THAT COULD POSSIBLY MAKE PEOPLE NEVER TALK TO YOU AGAIN? COULD YOU LIVE IN A WORLD THAT WAS THE SAME: NO PAIN, NO ANGER, NO LOVE, NOTHING?

8 What devices can I use to start my book talk opening…?
Rhetorical question “Imagine” statement Alliteration Other figurative language devices

9 What Not to Do in a Book Talk
Do not give away the ending Do not give away important parts of the book Do not make too long Do not give summary! Do not give a review!

10 QUESTIONS TO KEEP IN MIND AND INCLUDE IN BETWEEN DISCUSSING BOOK EVENTS
WHAT NEW IDEAS/PERSPECTIVES HAVE I GAINED BY READING? AFTER READING TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD, I LEARNED THAT PEOPLE WERE, AND STILL ARE TREATED JUST BECAUSE OF THE SIMPLE THINGS ABOUT THEM: POPULARITY, COLOR, ETHNICITY, ETC. HOW HAS THIS TEXT CHANGED MY THINKING? I REALIZE THAT I JUDGE PEOPLE BASED ON SMALL IDEAS, AND THAT I NEED TO PUT MORE THOUGHT INTO HOW I INTERPRET A NEW PERSON IN MY LIFE. WHAT NEW INFORMATION HAVE I LEARNED? I LEARNED THAT EVEN AFTER SLAVES WERE EMANCIPATED, THEY WERE STILL TREATED HORRIBLY, AND EVEN IN 2015, PEOPLE ARE TREATED AND JUDGED BASED SOLEY ON THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN OR OTHER SIMPLE REASONS. WHAT IN THE TEXT REALLY MADE AN IMPACT ON ME? WHY? SEEING HOW CHILDREN ACCEPTED THE “UNACCEPTED” MADE ME REALIZE THAT MOST OF WHAT WE DO IS BASED ON WHAT WE LEARN, NOT ON WHAT WE KNOW. WE ARE TAUGHT TO ACT AND THINK IN CERTAIN WAYS.
