Journal 10 Implicit vs. Explicit

Definitions Explicit: clear, obvious meaning
Implicit: less obvious or hidden meaning. Example: Carrie Underwood didn’t tell us that the women in the song killed their husband. She gave us implicit clues to guess what happened.

Guys vs. Girls Girls often speak more implicitly whereas guys are more explicit. For example: When I got married, I thought it was my husbands job to take out the garbage. I would give him implicit messages like, “Wow, the garbage is really full.” It was a few weeks into our marriage before I finally started being explicit and saying, “Honey, will you please take out the garbage?”

Directions Journal 10: Draw a line down the middle half of your journal. At the top of the left side, write the word: Implicit. On the top right side, write the word: Explicit. For this entry I would like you to write down the implicit and explicit meaning for examples 1, 2. and 3 and then come up with one of your own.

Implicit Example #1 What are you up to tonight?

Explicit Example #1 If you’re not busy tonight, would you like to go out with me?

Implicit Example #2 “Well, we should probably let you go home.”

Explicit Example #2 "Go home now!"

Implicit Example #3 “Is the window open?”

Explicit Example #3 “Close the window; it’s freezing!”

What are some we can add? Write in your journal an implicit phrase and the explicit meaning for what was said.
